Breeding discus- my own experiences

A few years ago discus breeding was considered to be very difficult but nowadays with more equipment and knowledge available, the art of fish breeding has become more and more within the reach of everyone with a bit of effort and care. Breeding wild discus is still a bit hit and miss, most tank bred strains will spawn, once paired, and are not so fussy of water parameters.
To breed these fish, obviously you will need a pair, the best way of acheiving this is to purchase a group of young fish and allow them to pair up themselves. It is often best to purchase the fish from different suppliers to ensure that there is no chance of in-breeding which will weaken the genes and can result in poor quality offspring.

The breeding tank is very simple to set up. A 20 gallon tank is plenty large enough even with 2 large adults, no substrate should be added, just a double sponge filter and a breeding cone or inverted terracota plant pot for the fish to lay their eggs on. Quite often, even with the addition of these, the fish will still choose to lay their eggs on the glass but at least you have given them the choice. The pH should be set at 6.5 with a KH of 2-3 to produce soft, acidic water, ideal for these fish. The temperature should be set between 28-30 deg
How do you know if a pair has formed, quite easily, they will display to each other, they will bow their heads to each other and often they will swim to a corner of the tank on their own, away from their tankmates.
Move the pair to the breeding tank and give them a quality diet to condition them into spawning mode, they will sometimes darken up as extra mucus is produced on their bodies in preparation for feeding the fry.
The eggs will be laid by the female in in long strips along the side of the cone, closely followed by the male keen to fertilise them. This may not be successful with the first few batches, indeed the parents may even eat the eggs but be patient, in time the parents will learn how to look after the spawn and good, healthy fertilised eggs will be produced.

Any white eggs have either not been fertilised or may have fungus, these should be removed. The parents will fan the eggs to ensure a good water movement over them and in 60-70 hours the good eggs should hatch.

At this stage the fry are known as wrigglers and will stick to the cone, consuming their yolk sacs. The parents will still tend to the young, replacing any that have fallen off the cone and generally keeping them safe.
After 2 days the fry will become free-swimming and cling to their parent's sides. This is a crucial stage , they need to feed off their parent's mucus to survive. The parents will take it in turns to feed the young, this is neccessary for 4 weeks.
During this stage newly hatched brine shrimp should also be offered to the fry to wean them away from the parents but any uneaten food must be syphoned carefully out of the tank. Water changes must be done daily, 50% per day at least, keep checking that no fry have been syphoned out.

These fry will grow quickly and after 4 weeks they should be fully weaned and independant of their parents, at this stage they need to be moved to growing on tanks. While you are moving them, check for deformities as these fry need to be disposed of humanely, all the healthy fry should be the size of a fingernail.
Feeding the fry should take place 3-4 times per day, keeping the tank clean after each feed, but watch out for fry that are not growing as fast as the others, these will need moving to yet another tank so that they can get their fair share of food.

This is just a general guide to breed these fish , there are things that can go wrong, but I hope it gives you some insight into an enjoyable aspect of keeping these superb fish.
