cyprinid's (coarse species)

Postby carplover » Sat Dec 27, 2014 6:26 pm

Hi everyone
I know your not meant to keep carp or other coarse fish in tanks but I will be putting two tench and three carp all 3-4 inch's in a 100 litre tank, the reason for this is I am waiting for the inlaws to remove some of there goldfish which have breed over the years in there garden pond. What I need to know from the experts is keeping in mind these species produce alot of crap, what pump filter system along with the type of media would be okay use. Any help is welcome and appreciated!

Please don't try to tell me that its wrong to keep these species in a tank, its only for a short time.

Many thanks!!

Hello mate and welcome to the forums. There's no reason why our native species cannot be kept in an aquarium it's just the size of the tank that's a problem. That being said the size of the pond would denote the size of filter you would need, bigger the better but at least a 4 chamber with brushes in the first, to catch the solids. jap matting in the 2nd going on to 3 grades of sponge with a bio media in the last, Flocor or volcanic rock would do. This is my personal preference and has served me well for a 5000 gallon pond over the last 8 years.

As big an external filter that you can get but at least one that will turn over the volume at least 4 times per hour.

Keep in mind that size tank will not do them for long though.

Would love to see the tank and its inhabitants when you have it up and running. What size pond do you have?
