stocking a new tank?

Postby markabi » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:08 pm

ok we have a 40 gallon tank almost ready to stock.
we want to stock fish that will occupy all levels
which fish (and how many) would you use for each level (is there a list on here that shows which fish dwell at which levels somewhere - just love a good spreadsheet :-): )
we would be starting with 5 x white mountain minnows that we already have.
looking forward to some help with this.

Sorry no spreadsheets.

There is the profiles section which will tell you the basics for each species such as what level they swim etc.
Is it a standard (rectangular) 40G or what are it's dimensions?

If you want to see fish at all levels you'll want to go with the smaller species and probably those that prefer groups.
Cory cats are popular and active bottom dwellers that do well with a large variety of fish.
Tetra's (and there are a lot to choose from) will occupy the middle for the most part.
Hatchet fish are popular. Dwarf Gourami's is another top swimmer.

Take your time choosing there's a lot to consider when picking suitable tank mates. You've got the minnow's so you've at least got a starting point to choose from.
