New Tank Water Tests

Postby pippy1901 » Wed Dec 19, 2012 12:09 am

I've just got a 54litre tank and it's been filled with water and the pump/filter running for 5 days. I've done water tests today but not really sure what i'm looking at results wise so any advice would be appreciated.
The PH level is 7.6 high ph 8.0
The ammonia is 0.25ppm
The Nitrite is 0
The nitrate is zero.
I was advised to do these tests by the shop but the info in the book relates to established tanks. There are currently no fish in the tank but we are hoping to add a couple of platies this weekend, if the water is ok. If these levels are bad for fish, is there anything i can add to make things ok.
Thanks in advance for any advice. ;plo)

Hi, are you adding anything to the tank to start off the cycle?

You need to cycle the tank if you look in this section there are a couple of posts about fishless cycle and fish in tank cycles, fishless cycle is the best and safest way to go for your tank and fish.
Leaving a tank running without adding anything to cycle it sadly does nothing.
When you cycle the tank you will get higher readings of ammonia, as they spike and then begin fall you will then get a rise in nitrites, only when this has dropped back to 0 will your tank be ready for fish, you want 0 on ammonia and nitrite, keep the nitrates under 40ppm. When doing the nitrate test follow the instructions as on the API kit, bottle no2 needs to be shaken for 30 seconds before being added to the testtube then the tube needs to be shaken for a minute or you get false readings.

To cycle a tank, that is, make it ready to sustain fish life, you have to get the filter primed to deal with the fish's waste. If you just add fish to a new tank without doing this they end up swimming around in their own waste until the filter can process it. With a fishless cycle we add something to the water that will simulate this process without ill treating the fish. As stated there are articles on this right here which will guide you through the process, if you have any questions after reading just post and someone will help you out.
