Help! I've been left in charge of Fish Tank

Hia Folks

Not been on here for a while :-):

My daughter is now at University and staying away from home. I have been left in charge of the Tropical Fish Tank. I am feeding the fish every few days as before. She used to do "water changes" every now and then. Take a third of the water out of the tank, and replace it with new water. She seemed to do this with water direct from the tap. Not sure if she squirted anything in the water. I will have to ask her....

She did mention I needed to clean the filter every now and then:sos:

To me, the whole thing needs emptying and a good scrubbing before replacing with nice fresh clean water etc. Surely the bottom of the tank gets revolting and gunky?

Also, I wish it didn't make so much noise!! There's something that produces bubbles and a vibrating something else outside of the water which we have "padded" with towels, but it continually buzzes.

Considering the tank has fish in it I wouldn't empty it and refill it as this will shock the fish and could potentially harm them. However you could take out the ornaments and scrub them (not with soap). The thing that is vibrating is most likely an air pump which provides oxygen for the fish by producing those bubbles. Heres an article anita wrote which covers the basics of maintaining an aquarium viewtopic.php?f=37&t=1065 and I'm sure there is a more in depth one somewhere.
When in doubt get another tank.
I keep water the fish are just for decoration.

As getthejist stated, dont empty it and scrub it or you will kill of the good bacteria needed to support the fish. Do weekly waterchanges of about 20% and if she has a water conditioner add that to the fresh water before adding it to the tank. When it comes to cleaning the filter only clean it with tank water, put some tank water into a bucket/bowl and wash the filters in there. Never use tap water. You can use a gravel vac to clean the gravel if she has one otherwise gently stir up the gravel and use a hose to syphon as much of the debris stirring kicks up.
Anitas link covers this as well.

Ok, I've taken out half of the water, I've washed all the things in the fishtank with the water (which was disgusting!) and refilled it with fresh water including some of that stuff you squirt in with the tap water. It's all looking a bit murky right now, but hopefully it should clear.

Only issue is the sand at the bottom is all gunky!! I need to syphon some of the gunk away don't I? I have found the "tap" attachment to the tubes now, which I couldn't find before. So I might see if that works.

Any tips would be gratefully appreciated.

You may not get the sand clean after the first attempt but stick with it and just keep having a go until you are satisfied with it.
