Please need help - White stuff coming from dwarf rainbow

Postby finnatic » Sat Jan 03, 2015 4:59 pm

I am a newbie and would appreciate your help.

Context: I saw some white stuff coming from male dwarf rainbow one day back. I thought it was an isolated incident and did not pay attention. It happened twice since than and I am concerned if it has to do something with an internal parasite. The male is doing ok for now. Rest of the fish are fine.

Please review picture on photo-bucket to get a better feel.

It is quite hard to tell from the picture as to what it is. Did you cycle the tank before adding the fish?
Have you followed the test kit instructions properly as it is unusual to have a 0 reading for nitrates in a tank. What is your pH?
Does it look like it is coming out the fish or off it? Rainbows are prone to fungus like growths but usually its on their lips. They are also prone to white spot and velvet and get stressed quite easily.

Quick update:

I was able to get advise from a specialist at my LFS. He suggested to mix/soak Seachem Metronidazole powder in the fish flakes. I started using it right away. For some reason, the male dwarf rainbow did not eat the food so I quarantined it into a small 1 gallon tank and mixed the powder directly into the water. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Rest of the fish ate the soaked flakes and are doing fine.
