High levels

Postby rachelrjs » Thu Aug 14, 2014 9:36 pm

Hi there,
We've had a cold water tank set up for about a month now but we still have high nitrite levels. We currently have 2 platys as we don't want to add anymore until the water is safer! We do regular 25% water changes (twice a week) but still have high levels in the tank! What can we do to bring them down?

The tank is still cycling, because you have fish in there you need to keep doing water changes to keep them low, once the tank is cycled you will be able to cut back to once a week water changes. When cleaning the filter only ever use old tank water so that you do not kill the good bacteria needed.

I would put a heater in and slowly tweak the temperature up to 26C to help the bacteria and not clean the filter until it's cycled. What size is the tank?
