HELP - Smelly Water

Postby Cailey » Thu Oct 27, 2011 8:36 pm

Hi

I am new on here and need some help please.

We have recently moved house just round the corner and just cleaned and moved the tank from its original home. (were in a house now in a flat)

But after setting up after a couple of days there is this disgusting smell like a gas smell. So I gutted it and re-tried again, and within 48 hours the smell is back.

Where we were originally living I have never experienced this smell in 18 years of fish keeping.

I have left the fish out of the tank for the moment. Done all tests and all levels are fine. Have done nothing different than I normally do in fish keeping. Except move house.

This is racking my brain as to what is causing it.

Hope someone out there can help :O)

I'd check everything in the new flat first, sounds like the new premises are the only difference.

Nothing to worry about, it's sulphur dioxide, there are certain species of bacteria that live in anoxic and anaerobic zones in the substrate, as part of anaerobic digestion they create hydrogen sulfide, which when disturbed oxidises in oxygenated water to form sulphur dioxide which has a characteristic rotten egg smell when it bubbles out of the tank and into the air which can linger. It'll rectify itself.

Not really, it may make it worse as the substrate may be further disturbed, just keep the tank well aerated and fumigate the room.
