How do you clean an acrylic tank?

Postby Getthejist » Sat Mar 24, 2012 2:53 pm

Hey guys i recently got a 12 gallon acrylic tank from a friend and there is this really weird substance on the back wall (back of the tank) and I'm struggling to get it off, but I don't want to scratch the arcylic. Some is also on the front and side walls. Somebody help please. I want to get this tank up and running as soon as possible. Also he kept shrimp in here so I don't know what the stuff could be. I'll post a picture soon :-):
When in doubt get another tank.
I keep water the fish are just for decoration.

I wonder if that vinegar method would work on an acrylic tank?

Katfish wrote:I used 15ltr of white vinegar so around 2% which I thought was a bit low when I did it but over the week it did the job nice still had to put a bit of elbow grease in on some bits.

I don't know that it would so I'd hold off until some other opinions come in.

I used to just use a sponge and elbow grease on my acrylic tank.

you still have the sterilising fluid option, that works on both tanks. I'm not sure what vinegar does to acrylic, probably doesn't affect it but hopefully someone else knows for sure.

My worry is that if you use the wrong thing you could cloud the acrylic.
You could/should always test whatever it is you use anyway on a spot that isn't seen.
I'd probably try that vinegar on the bottom and if there's no reaction after a while then go for it.

White vinegar works great on acrylic and wont cloud it at all, also a bit of muslin works great as your abrasive,it wont scratch the tank !! :thu:
Keep good water = Keep good fish!!
